(Reuters-New York Times) President Obama took a step toward improving relations with Syria on Tuesday by nominating a career diplomat, Robert Ford, to be the U.S. ambassador to Damascus. The U.S. withdrew its ambassador from Damascus in 2005 after Rafik Hariri, the former Lebanese prime minister, was assassinated in Beirut. Lebanese critics contended that Syria was involved in the killing.
