Kurds have unsuccessfully sought freedom and self-determination since dissolution of the Ottoman Empire after World War I. Kurds were promised independence in the Treaty of Sevres (1920), but the treaty was supplanted by the Treaty of Lausanne (1923), which was silent on the subject of Kurdish rights.
