(Foreign Policy) Colum Lynch - For more than five years the Obama administration could largely be counted on to watch Israel's back in the UN Security Council. That changed on July 28 when the council, with the backing of the U.S., issued a formal "presidential statement" demanding that Israel and Hamas implement an "immediate and unconditional" cease-fire. In response to the UN call for a cease-fire, Israel's UN ambassador Ron Prosor protested the council's failure to condemn Hamas' battering of Israeli towns and cities with more than 2,500 rockets since the fighting began.
