(New York Times) Helene Cooper - Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Wednesday that Russian airstrikes have stabilized the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. He also said the American-led coalition battling the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq had made significant gains, retaking a large stretch of territory north of the IS stronghold of Raqqa in Syria.
