(New York Times) Michael Schwirtz and Nada Homsi - The UN Security Council, facing staunch opposition from Russia, failed to pass a resolution on Thursday to impose a 30-day cease-fire in Syria to allow humanitarian aid to reached the besieged Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta, where the death toll this week rose to more than 300. Some 42 people, mostly women and children, were killed when a rocket hit their shelter in the village of Beit Sawa. Only seven people who were in the shelter survived.
