(Newsweek) Tony Badran - In theory, the mission of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is to prevent Hizbullah from launching attacks against Israel from southern Lebanon, and to ensure the area is free of weapons. In practice, UNIFIL is an expensive charade. Hizbullah holds absolute sway in southern Lebanon. When UNIFIL attempted to enhance its surveillance capabilities in 2020 through the installation of advanced cameras at 19 locations near the border, Hizbullah threatened to respond and the plan was abandoned.
