(New York Times) Jane Arraf - The U.S. military on Thursday said it had completed its transition from a combat mission in Iraq to one meant to "advise, assist and enable" Iraqi forces battling the remnants of the Islamic State. The U.S. will keep 2,500 soldiers on the ground in support roles. Iraqi forces still rely on the U.S.-led coalition for intelligence help, operational planning and air support. The remaining U.S. presence is opposed by Iranian-backed militia groups who have called for the complete withdrawal of American forces.
