France Opens Museum Dedicated to Dreyfus Affair


(JTA) Cnaan Liphshiz - A museum dedicated to the wrongful and anti-Semitic persecution of French army captain Alfred Dreyfus was inaugurated by President Emmanuel Macron last week in the Paris suburb of Medan. In 1906, Dreyfus was exonerated from trumped-up espionage charges and convictions after an 8-year ordeal. The renowned non-Jewish French writer Emile Zola had a key role in leading opposition and protests against the injustice done to Dreyfus, and Zola lived in the building where the institution is housed. Theodor Herzl, who many view as the father of modern secular Zionism, covered the trial as a journalist and later described it as a watershed moment in his ideological development from an assimilationist Jew into a Zionist.
