News Resources - USA and Europe:
On May 2, both branches of Congress expressed solidarity with Israel "as it takes necessary steps to provide security to its people by dismantling the terrorist infrastructure in the Palestinian areas." The Senate vote was 94 to 2, while the House voted 352 to 21. (New York Times) Secretary of State Colin Powell announced plans for an international peace conference on the Middle East early this summer. The conference would be at the foreign minister level, which would avert Israeli objections to Arafat's participation. (Washington Post) According to eyewitness accounts from Palestinians who participated in the battle for Jenin, none reported seeing large numbers of civilians killed. All said they were allowed to surrender or evacuate when they were ready to do so. (Boston Globe) Jenin: Capital of Palestinian Suicide Terrorists (IDF)
News Resources - Israel and Mideast:
West Bank Fatah movement leader Marwan Barghouti, arrested on April 15, admitted to Shin Bet security service interrogators that he helped plan terror attacks on Israeli civilians, using funds from Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat and arms from PA weapons storage facilities. (Ha'aretz) A Foreign Ministry release details that Yasser Arafat personally approved funding for Fatah-Tanzim operatives, with the knowledge that it would be used to finance terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians. The report is based on Shin Bet interrogations of Marwan Barghouti and captured Fatah leaders. The dimensions of the terror industry that Yasser Arafat built up in his kingdom far surpass even the most chilling assessments of Israels intelligence services. Every one of the branches of the Palestinian security regime was directly involved in the terror campaign. (Jerusalem Report) IDF film shows Palestinian walking over to stretcher, lying down, and being wrapped up. During the funeral procession, the "dead body" falls off the stretcher, gets up, and runs away. (IDF) Prime Minister Ariel Sharon begins a three-day visit to Washington next week, where he will present a "most serious" plan for Israeli-Palestinian peace. The plan is expected to include an international conference and long-term interim agreements. (Jerusalem Post)
Global Commentary and Think Tank Analysis
(Best of U.S., UK, and Israel):
The "Jenin massacre" is more than a fiction. It is a hoax. The UN's frantic hunt for a phantom massacre by Jews -- while ignoring massacre after massacre of Jews -- is grotesque and perverse. (Washington Post) Seven Palestinian civilians died in Jenin, not 500. Israeli soldiers actually lost their lives in order to keep the collateral deaths of Palestinian civilians to a minimum. The UN, whose positions on its fact-finding team are exposed in this study, would not commit itself to investigate the scale of Palestinian terrorism in Jenin. (JCPA) Of the 190 countries in the United Nations only one, Israel, has been singled out by a majority of the UN membership for extinction. No other UN member state has ever been so targeted, not even apartheid South Africa. (Washington Times) This analysis reviews the IDF's success in proactively disrupting terrorists' ability to target Israeli civilians, and exposes the depth of the Palestinian Authority's involvement in terrorism (Washington Institute for Near East Policy) The international calls for an investigation into Israel's conduct in Jenin follow all too closely the pattern of world support for Palestinian fabrications that are reminiscent of blood libels against the Jews throughout the ages. (JCPA) I stand with Israel, I stand with the Jews. I defend their right to exist, to defend themselves, to not let themselves be exterminated a second time. And disgusted by the anti-Semitism of many Italians, of many Europeans. (Corriere della Sera) With Arafat's newfound popularity, he must take these overdue measures: The U.S. and UK must now supervise the leadership of the Palestinian Authority.
