The U.S.-Israel relationship is a curious marriage of shared values, national interests, and domestic politics. Shared values as a fellow democracy, more than anything else, is the foundation of the bond. Since 1950, only 22 countries have maintained their democratic character continuously - and Israel is one of them. That millions of Americans have powerful religious connections to Israel and the Holy Land has only made the bond stronger.
