The Quiet Tragedy of Iraq's Assyrians


(FrontPageMagazine)Peter BetBasoo - The Assyrians, also known as Chaldeans and Syriacs, number an estimated 1.5 to 2 million, or about 8% of the Iraqi population. They have lived in northern Iraq since 5000 BCE, while the Arabs entered Iraq in 630 CE from Saudi Arabia and the Kurds came in 1050 CE from southwest Iran. There is systematic discrimination against and disenfranchisement of Assyrians, who are Christians and have their own language - modern Aramaic.
