(X) John Spencer - Everyone wants to compare Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza to other battles or wars. Israel is fighting a defensive war predominately in urban areas and not a single urban battle. Israel is a military that follows the laws of war, takes steps to prevent civilian casualties, facing 30,000 defenders in 400+ miles of tunnels and embedded in civilian areas and populations across multiple cities. The defenders use human shields. The defenders (Hamas) held over 200 (now 136) civilian hostages to include babies, launches thousands of rockets (+12k so far) at civilian populated areas of Israel, and the war is occurring within a few miles from Israel. There is no historical comparison to these contextual variables. Comparisons do not show there is a way to defeat a dug-in enemy defender without destruction even while implementing all precautions and limits on the use of force required by the laws of war.
