(CNN) Frida Ghitis - Iran launched more than 300 cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and explosive-laden drones toward Israel, the country they have repeatedly vowed to destroy. If Israel's defensive shield had failed, thousands of Israelis could have been killed. Even before Iran builds a nuclear weapon, it could use nuclear material inside a conventional weapon. Shooting it down would bring radioactive material to the ground. This is a challenge for the entire world. The notion that one day Iran would launch a direct attack against Israel may have seemed like a distant possibility. The same was true of Hamas in Gaza.
