U.S. Aid Goes to Abbas-Backed Palestinian Phone Venture
[Reuters] Adam Entous - U.S. aid in the form of loan guarantees meant for Palestinian farmers and other small to mid-sized businesses has been given to Wataniya Palestine, a mobile phone firm backed by PA leader Mahmoud Abbas and Gulf investors. Former Palestine Investment Fund board members and advisers challenged the justification for granting U.S. loan guarantees when the company's financial backers, including a Kuwaiti and Qatari telecom group, were highly profitable.
