IDF Evaluating "Safer" Cluster Bombs
(Jerusalem Post) Yaakov Katz - The IDF is conducting a reassessment of its use of cluster bombs after criticism over their use during the Second Lebanon War in 2006. Many of the bomblets did not explode and some, after the war, killed Lebanese civilians. The IDF is evaluating the M85 bomblet manufactured by Israel Military Industries (IMI) which has an internal self-destruct mechanism that destroys the mini-explosive if it fails to detonate, 14 seconds after impact. The IDF has until now refrained from purchasing the IMI bomblet due to budgetary constraints, purchasing instead U.S.-made cluster bombs with the foreign military aid funds it receives annually from the U.S.
