Olmert Memoir Cites Efforts for Peace Deal
(New York Times) Ethan Bronner - In excerpts from his memoirs published Thursday in Yediot Ahronot, and in an interview with the New York Times, Ehud Olmert, the former prime minister of Israel, said Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, had agreed that Israel could keep some land in the West Bank on which settlements had been built, but they disagreed over how much. Olmert wanted 6.5% of the area but would go as low as 5.9%; Abbas offered 1.9%. "Abu Mazen [Abbas] said that he could not decide and that he needed time," Olmert writes. "I told him that he was making an historic mistake."
