Once you subtract the Daughters of the American Revolution and the descendants of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, the rest of America is hyphenated in one way or another. If I was a Ukrainian-American, am I automatically suspect because I plead for an American policy that would resist Russian pressure against Kiev? Democracy is about "We the People." In the American case, "We" are no longer white Anglo-Saxon Protestants. The secret of this oldest democracy is the universalism that has preempted European-style religious and ideological bloodshed.
