Failure and Longevity: The Dominant Political Order of the Middle East

(MERIA Journal) Jonathan Spyer - The Middle East today is the "great exception" in terms of societal and political progress. Authoritarian rule, presiding over sluggish development, remains the norm. Almost without exception, the region remains divided between nationalist-military dictatorships and traditional, monarchical forms of government, neither of which have succeeded in developing successful, advanced economies or educated, mobile societies. This article looks at the key factors militating against domestically produced "regime change" in Egypt, Syria, and Saudi Arabia.
