The Book of Ruth Comes Alive in Antique Photos Taken 100 Years Ago
(Israel Daily Picture) The Jewish holiday of Shavuot will be celebrated on Sunday. Shavuot, the festival of weeks, marking seven weeks after Passover, is the festival of first fruits. According to Jewish tradition, it is the day the Children of Israel accepted the Torah at Mt. Sinai. The reading of the Book of Ruth is one of the traditions of the holiday. Photographs from the Library of Congress from 100 years ago depict members of the American Colony in Jerusalem - religious Christians - re-enacting the story of Ruth.
