Pressure Building Against Hizballah in Lebanon
[Washington Post] Anthony Shadid - The radical Shiite movement Hizballah and its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, hold an effective veto in Lebanese politics. Yet its force of arms has begun to endanger Hizballah's long-term standing in a country where critics accuse it of dragging Lebanon into an unwinnable conflict the government neither chose nor wants to fight. In the wake of Syria's withdrawal of its troops from Lebanon in 2005, the disarmament of Hizballah has emerged as one of the foremost issues in Lebanese politics. Since the fighting with Israel started Wednesday, calls for Hizballah to relinquish its weapons have gathered urgency. In meetings Thursday, Lebanese officials began to lay the groundwork for an extension of government control to southern Lebanon.
