In Northern Mali's War, Al-Qaeda Affiliate Is Directing the Fight
(Washington Post) Sudarsan Raghavan - Most of the rebels who took over Diabaly in central Mali for five days this month were Malian, but their commanders were foreigners who spoke Arabic. What began as a homegrown, Malian-led rebellion is now a conflict directed by al-Qaeda's West and North Africa wing, mostly foreign fighters from Algeria and Mauritania.
