War Jitters Hurting Some but Helping Others in Gulf Region
(New York Times) Greg Myre - Egypt's much needed tourists are staying away in record numbers. In Turkey, Jordan, and Syria, cut-rate oil imports and special trade deals with Iraq are at risk of evaporating. Turkey has been importing Iraqi oil at below market prices outside official UN channels for several years, with large tanker trucks daily crossing its border with northern Iraq. For the producer nations in the Persian Gulf, by contrast, the same war jitters have helped push oil prices to more than $33 a barrel and could produce at least a temporary windfall.
