Bush Asks Lands in Mideast to Try Democratic Ways
(New York Times) President Bush on Thursday challenged Iran, Syria, and two crucial Middle East allies of the United States - Egypt and Saudi Arabia - to begin embracing democratic traditions, and to view the fall of Saddam Hussein as "a watershed event in the global democratic revolution." "Sixty years of Western nations excusing and accommodating the lack of freedom in the Middle East did nothing to make us safe," Mr. Bush argued, "because in the long run, stability cannot be purchased at the expense of liberty."
