Israel Sends Amos-2 Telecommunications Satellite into Space
(Jerusalem Post) Arieh O'Sullivan - Israel's Amos-2 telecommunications satellite to provide cellular phone and on-line data links, and television transmissions was launched Saturday night atop a Russian Soyuz-FG rocket in Kazakhstan. Only seven other nations are capable of developing and producing communication satellites. The satellite will maintain a stationary position over western Africa, enabling it to focus on the Middle East, Central Europe, and the East Coast of the U.S. All of the transponder space on Amos-1, launched in 1996, had been sold; the Amos-2 has 50% more capacity and is expected to be in service until at least 2014. Work is underway on the Amos-3.
