Ancient Samson Mosaic Uncovered in Israeli Synagogue - with Photos
(Huffington Post) Meredith Bennett-Smith - Beautifully preserved mosaics have been unearthed in a fifth-century synagogue in Huqoq, an ancient Jewish village in Israel's lower Galilee. The stunning discoveries are part of an ongoing excavation at the site since 2011, led in part by Jodi Magness, a distinguished professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As detailed in the September/October issue of the Biblical Archeology Review, the team has uncovered a second Samson mosaic - one much better preserved than an earlier one. Another mosaic depicts colorful elephants and humans in scenes that have "absolutely no parallels in any other synagogue," Magness said. "And there are no elephants in the Hebrew Bible."
