Australia Drops "Occupied" from References to Israeli Settlements
(Australian Associated Press-Guardian-UK) The Australian government has ruled out using the term "occupied" when describing Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem, suggesting a shift in its foreign policy. Attorney general George Brandis, speaking on behalf of the minister for foreign affairs, Julie Bishop, said, "The description of East Jerusalem as 'occupied' East Jerusalem is a term freighted with pejorative implications which is neither appropriate nor useful." "It should not and will not be the practice of the Australian government to describe areas of negotiation in such judgmental language."
