Egypt's Long, Bloody Fight Against the Islamic State in Sinai
(Washington Post) Sudarsan Raghavan - Egyptian security forces are finding themselves increasingly bogged down in their four-year fight against an Islamic State affiliate in northern Sinai, despite billions of dollars in U.S. counterterrorism aid. Since July 2013, at least 1,000 Egyptian security forces have been killed in terrorist attacks, including more than 200 in 2017, according to the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy. Although there have been fewer terrorist attacks this year than last, the number of fatalities has risen, said Nancy Okail, the Tahrir Institute's executive director.
