Female Spearheads of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
(Ha'aretz) Sharon Geva - 75 years ago, in April 1943, the Warsaw Ghetto uprising became a symbol of Jewish heroism during the Holocaust. Women filled various roles in the resistance movements, including as underground couriers, traveling illegally, often alone, disguised as an Aryan. They smuggled news, documents, money, revolvers, hand grenades, food and medical supplies. Historian Dr. Emanuel Ringelblum, who initiated the most important archive created during the Holocaust, wrote in May 1942: "These heroic girls are in mortal danger every day. Without a murmur, without a moment of hesitation they accept and carry out the most dangerous missions....How many times have they seen death eye to eye? How many times have they been arrested, how many times have they been searched?"
