Jewish Doctors in Medieval Islam
(Jerusalem Post) Kenneth Collins - Jewish Medical Practitioners in the Medieval Muslim World, by Efraim Lev, Professor of Land of Israel Studies at Haifa University, presents information on the lives of 600 Jewish physicians and pharmacists in the Islamic world of the Middle Ages. The book is based on documents from the Geniza (document repository) of Cairo's Ben Ezra Synagogue, as well as medieval Muslim Arabic sources. Jewish physicians and pharmacists had mainly good relations with Christian and Muslim colleagues. For example, in the 12th century, Nethanel ben Samuel, who practiced medicine in Cairo, was the physician of the legendary Saladin.
