Why Iran Has Waited to Retaliate Against Israel for Hamas Leader's Killing

(New York Times) Matthew Mpoke Bigg - Iran vowed revenge after top Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran on July 31, but nearly two weeks have passed and no large-scale response has materialized. Analysts say Iran is trying to formulate a response that doesn't lead to all-out war against a powerful adversary. Ali Vaez, the Iran project director of the Crisis Group think tank, says a substantive response would likely provoke a bigger Israeli response - and Tehran would not be able to control the cycle of escalation that could follow. "Israel has checkmated Iran in this situation because Iran is left with no good options," he said.
