President Trump Wants to Calm Things Down until the U.S. Midterm Elections
(Telegraph-UK) Paul Nuki - After Donald Trump agreed to a deal with Iran, no one in Israel was celebrating. There was a sense that the deal leaves the "head of the octopus" in place and restricts the Israel Defense Forces from operating against Hizbullah in Lebanon. Dr. Dan Diker, president of the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs, said, "The Iranian regime is [now] waging war by other means. Instead of fighting the forever war, they're now moving to another version of warfare, which is negotiation warfare. The [U.S.] president is playing along, but I am unconvinced that the president is going to sign a deal as long as he continues to see the regime attacking Israel or other Western interests." Instead he believes Mr. Trump is playing for time. "The president sees oil prices below $90 and the president sees the midterms coming up, and the possibility of the perception of peace. The president wants to calm things down until the midterms, and then once the midterms are over, if Iran keeps violating and attacking, there's a fair prospect that he'll finish the war." "It looks like the Iranian regime has, for the moment, outmaneuvered both the U.S. and the West. The Iranian regime has said, 'Hey, look, we're not only alive and kicking, we're winning the asymmetric war against the greatest power in the world.'" "They are trying to delegitimize the president and force daylight between the U.S. and Israel. They know that if they can force that daylight, which appears to be at the moment a little bit brighter, then they have really compromised both the U.S. and Israel." "This is not a deal between two Western countries. This is a proposed deal with an apocalyptic messianic regime that has been committed for 47 years to destroy America, the Western powers and Israel. I am optimistic because Israel has always risen to the occasion, and Prime Minister Netanyahu has always done very well under adverse conditions."
