Antisemitism among College Faculty and in Classrooms
(Anti-Defamation League) Across multiple campuses and disciplines, there is a discernible trend in which discourse surrounding Israel, Zionism and Jewish identity is framed in ways that go beyond critical inquiry and, in some cases, veer into rhetoric that can reasonably be understood as antisemitic. These dynamics operate in individual classroom interactions as well as broader institutional choices about curriculum and programming. Academic freedom cannot serve as a shield for the repeated presentation of one-sided or exclusionary narratives that delegitimize or demonize a particular people or identity. When critiques of Israel are advanced that erase Jewish historical ties, apply double standards or invoke tropes that echo longstanding antisemitic themes, the result is the normalization of bias within academic spaces.
