Photographic Secrets from the Arab-Israeli Battlefield in Israel's War of Independence
(Substack) Lenny Ben-David - During Israel's War of Independence, 700 Jews were captured by the Transjordan Arab Legion in 1948, principally from Gush Etzion and Jerusalem's Jewish Quarter, with smaller groups from Gezer and Naharayim. Many were civilians. The 1948-49 POW photographs show tents, roll calls, medical treatment, women beside a Red Cross vehicle, Orthodox elders among kibbutzniks, and prisoners organizing a communal life behind barbed wire. The writer, a former AIPAC official and Israeli diplomat, is a research fellow at the Jerusalem Center.
