IDF Chief: "Hamas Has Been Defeated"
(Ynet News) Amir Ettinger - During a security briefing this month, Brig.-Gen. Ofir Mizrahi, head of the Research Division in IDF Intelligence, warned, "We identify a desire by Hamas to renew governance...recruit people, build up its strength and restore its capabilities. We need to pay attention to the fact that Hamas is still a threatening organization." IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir responded, "Those are their intentions. But alongside that, I am telling you...Hamas is a defeated organization. It does not fire. We are eliminating its weapons depots, we are eliminating its senior figures and those who carried out Oct. 7. It does not respond, and therefore it can be said that Hamas has been defeated." However, he was not saying that Hamas had been destroyed or disarmed. The military intends to continue operating against the group until it is demilitarized. The IDF now controls 64% of Gaza. According to the Israeli assessment, Hamas is not currently receiving the same support from regional states and organizations that previously backed it, in part because many of those are themselves under pressure from Israel.
