(Substack) Lenny Ben-David - Israeli women were captured by the Jordanians in the 1948 War of Independence at the overrun Gush Etzion communities, the hydroelectric works at Naharayim, and Jerusalem's Jewish Quarter. An IDF journal listed 89 women in Jordanian hands. About 240 defenders and residents died in the campaign for the four Gush Etzion communities, including 22 women killed in the final fighting before their surrender on May 14, 1948. The writer, a former AIPAC official and Israeli diplomat, is a research fellow at the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs.
