How the Oct. 7 Crisis Rewired Israel's Defense Tech Ecosystem

(Jerusalem Post) Anna Ahronheim - Three years after the deadly Hamas attack on Oct. 7, Israel's defense tech ecosystem looks fundamentally different from what it was before the war. It is larger, faster, more integrated with the military, and more mission-driven. Before the war, Israel was already a global center for defense innovation. Yet much of the start-up ecosystem remained oriented toward civilian markets, particularly cybersecurity. Within weeks and months, reservists returning from Gaza and engineers working in tech companies began identifying problems they had encountered firsthand. The result was a new generation of companies building counter-drone systems, autonomous platforms, artificial intelligence, battlefield communications, electronic warfare, robotics, intelligence, and logistics. The Israeli defense tech ecosystem has grown from 160 companies before Oct. 7 to over 300 today. Private investment surged from $1 billion in 2025 to $3 billion in 2026. AI and machine learning became central tools for anomaly detection, drone swarm prediction, real-time battlefield analytics, and automated threat classification. Autonomous ground vehicles, robotic logistics, and battlefield medical systems advanced rapidly. Cyber defense also intensified. Bureaucratic barriers fell, procurement processes were streamlined, and wartime urgency shortened development cycles dramatically. Technologies that once took years to test and certify were deployed within months.
